I picked up this book at the library. We usually go there to pick up suspense fiction for my wife and some toddler books for my daughter. As I was browsing the children’s aisle, I spotted this one shelved under children’s books. Since it was related to India and Indian mythology, it piqued my interest.

Classic Tales from India collects several stories drawn from various Puranas. They’re narrated for a child audience — specifically, in a style suited to a child growing up in the United States today. Each story is kept short but still manages to convey a fair bit of detail. The real highlight of the book is the artwork: traditional Indian art styles that make the pages stand out and add a lot of visual appeal.

What I didn’t like: the stories drawn from the Ramayana and Mahabharata deviate in places from Valmiki’s Ramayana and Vyasa’s Mahabharata. This is most likely because these versions were sourced from later Puranas rather than the original epics, but the book never says so. It would have helped a lot if each story credited its specific source.

Overall, it’s a good book to give younger children a brief introduction to Indian Puranic stories.
